Janet Jackson Thrills Fans With Greatest Hits, Michael Tribute At Radio City

Singer covered songs ranging from classic 'Pleasure Principle' to 2008's 'Feedback' at New York show.

NEW YORK — Often imitated, never duplicated, Janet Jackson's outbursts of meticulous choreography, sassy exclamations and smoldering gazes into the audience kept them on their feet for the entire two-hour set of her greatest hits at Radio City Music Hall. Monday night marked the last of three sold-out shows at the historic venue on her monumental Number Ones: Up Close and Personal Tour.

Up-and-coming boy band Mindless Behavior opened the show with songs including "#1 Girl," "Future" and their debut single, "My Girl." With their Usher-esque dance moves and shouts like "Where the ladies at?" the boys brought the tween girls out of hiding, judging by the shrill screams escaping various corner of the music hall.

At 9:00 sharp, the lights went down and Janet's fans were on the edge of their seats, watching music videos for "The Best Things in Life Are Free" and "Rhythm Nation" projected on big screens across the venue. A small shadow drifted toward center stage, and when the colorful lights came up, Jackson, wrapped in a shoulder-padded catsuit, complete with slick short hair, blasted into "The Pleasure Principle," dancing as hard and intensely choreographed as she did when the song first came out in the 1980s.

With barely a spare second between songs, Janet dazzled her way through her biggest hits, including "Miss You Much," "All for You" and "Nasty," and more recent hits like 2008's "Feedback."

Videos displayed during Jackson's costume changes included vintage clips from "Diff'rent Strokes," a funny scene from "Poetic Justice" where Jackson slyly rejects the advances of Tupac Shakur's character, and a rather heavy scene, as Jackson's character in "Why Did I Get Married" destroys her husband's house with a golf club, screaming hysterically.

Considering the tough couple of years the Jackson family has faced, the dark moments in the video seemed fitting, and everyone was beside themselves with bittersweet joy when Michael Jackson's face popped up on the big screen and she performed their hit single "Scream."

Janet emerged for her encore in a tight white one-piece disco suit, and performed "Diamonds," "Make Me" and "Together Again," which appeared to be the biggest hit of the evening. As Jackson graciously bowed out, her straight face transitioned into a smirk, suggesting that despite the hard times she has experienced recently, we can expect to see this singing and dancing pop legend shine far into the future.

"Its amazing!" Janet fan Elena Mercantini gleamed afterward. "It's like she's still 20 years old!"

"She's hot, she's amazing and she's still got it after all these years" added Alison Klinger of Long Island. "Best concert I've ever been to!"

Anne Hathaway's Catwoman: Experts Weigh In

'Dark Knight Rises' photo has comics and movie insiders cautiously optimistic.
By Kara Warner

Anne Hathaway as Catwoman in "Dark Knight Rises"
Photo: Warner Bros

Nothing sets the Internet ablaze like new info about Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" — especially when the latest sneak peek is a photo of Anne Hathaway in costume as Catwoman riding a fancy motorcycle.

MTV News consulted a few experts to gauge reactions to what looks to be Hathaway's Catwoman costume, as well as what we might expect from the actress' overall portrayal of Selina Kyle.

Check out our photo analysis of Hathaway's Catwoman.

"Listen, is this the costume that artist Darwyn Cooke revamped for his 'Catwoman' run? The one that marked her shift from slinky, skintight femme fatale to flawed-but-furious thief and defender of the downtrodden? No," said Marc Bernardin, a writer for Syfy's "Alphas" and DC Comics' "The Authority." "But it's shiny, black, seemingly functional, and has at least one zipper. Which makes it OK in my book — hey, I like zippers."

UGO movies editor Jordan Hoffman pointed out the fact that Kyle/Catwoman's suit is lacking a familiar feline element. "Clearly the suit's tail is detachable for when she's rollin' in the Bat-cycle," he said of the outfit's lack of a tail. "I mean, otherwise it's a real danger!"

With regard to how Hathaway will pull off the storied complexities of Kyle's character in the comics — depending, of course, on which direction Nolan's Catwoman may take — our experts are cautiously optimistic.

"I think I had the same feeling as everyone else when Anne Hathaway was cast. She looks too sweet to play Selina," said Jenna Busch, writer for AOL's Moviefone. "She looks too, well, totally sane. She doesn't exactly ooze sexuality. But I'm willing to buy it after seeing the photo," she admitted. "Now, there is no kitty-cat hat, and fans will probably flip if she spends the entire film as Selina, but she does look pretty darn badass. I'm in. And hey, at least she's not wearing that god-awful Halle Berry outfit!"

"Anne Hathaway was never my first choice — I was rooting for [Marion] Cotillard before she got the Talia role — but Nolan has earned enough good will for me to trust him," Hoffman said. "She certainly isn't hard on the eyes, and so long as Selina Kyle is crafty and that Catwoman eventually has a tail, I'll be happy."

"It's hard to say, just by a single image, if Anne Hathaway's gonna sell Selina Kyle's sultry strength," Bernardin added. "But if this Catwoman-in-the-making just stole Batman's ride ... she's gonna be formidable, to say the least."

What do you think of the first look at Hathaway's Catwoman? Let us know on Facebook!

OH SNAP: Nicki Minaj's 9-1-1 Call, Screams "What You Hittin' Me For?!"

The 9-1-1 call has just been released of Nicki Minaj's scuffle with "a mystery male" that happened a few weeks ago.  And it's pretty strong evidence that the man Nicki was fighting with was indeed her man Safaree.

Peep the emotional audio inside...

Just as previously reported in the police document, a hotel employee (front desk manager) was summoned to Nicki's room when an argument escalated with a man whom she claims "she's not in a relationship with."

CLICK HERE FOR 9-1-1 CALL AUDIO

Arguing can be heard in the background of the front office manager's phone after he calls the police department.  Nicki sounds extremely scared screaming:

"Why you hittin' me?! Why you hittin' me?!"

Then she goes to the manager saying, "Look what he did to my face! Look what he did to my face!"

And the the male voice can be heard screaming:

"This my luggage! I want my fu*kin money!  Give me my mutha fuc*in suitcase...."

Nicki claimed in the police report that "the man's" suitcase hit her in the face when he was attempting to grab it from her.

You can also here on the audio the officer confirming it's "Nicki Minaj's group" and "she got hit in the face by someone."

Even though Safaree (her hype man/boyfriend) claims he did nothing to her (and even wore a shirt saying DON'T BELIEVE THE BLOGS), we're pretty positive it's his voice we hear prominently arguing with Nicki.  You can compare it with his speaking voice in Nicki's recent MTV documentary HERE.  Scroll to the 2:45 mark.

We're not sayin', but we're just sayin'....

Jay-Z, Kanye West Warned By Los: Crown Ain't Safe

DMV Music rapper tells Mixtape Daily about Worth the Wait, inspired by Lil Wayne.
By Rob Markman

Los
Photo: MTV News

Fire Starter: Los

Baltimore rapper Los sure is confident in his ability. Then again, why wouldn't he be? The DMV representative got his start locally, then signed with Diddy's Bad Boy label around 2005. The deal didn't pan out, but now Los, who has been a free agent since 2008, is aiming for rap's top spot: He thinks he has a shot at one day surpassing the likes of rap kings Jay-Z, Kanye West and Lil Wayne.

Los' upcoming mixtape, The Crown Ain't Safe, is a proclamation of his self-perceived greatness. "When I say The Crown Ain't Safe, I just mean whoever is viewed as #1," Los told Mixtape Daily before referencing basketball great Michael Jordan and his onetime sidekick. "I just feel like it's for the taking. Why wouldn't you want to be #1? I'm not Scottie Pippen: I want to be #1."

He almost had his shot: After an audition for Diddy during which Los performed a 10-minute freestyle for the hip-hop mogul, the young spitter earned himself a deal. But after Los' street-affiliated independent label Block Incorporated disbanded, Diddy backed out. Los was released from the label in 2008 without ever dropping an album. He then began to freestyle over popular rap tracks like "A Milli" and post them on YouTube, building his buzz virally.

In total, Los estimates he's recorded 10 mixtapes since 2008, including his latest, Worth the Wait, a tape inspired by Lil Wayne. "The competitive nature of this art form drives me," he explained. "Wayne dropped Sorry 4 the Wait, and it just gave me this idea: 'Man, I got a project coming out, and people are kinda waiting for it too. I'll drop Worth the Wait.' "

Worth the Wait is merely an appetizer for what Los hopes will be his biggest tape, the ambitiously titled The Crown Ain't Safe. He makes no reservations about wanting to eventually be the game's top rapper, but Los insists he isn't launching any personal attacks.

"Jay-Z, I would never disrespect him. I have an immense amount of respect, principles and morals. I'm not just some cannon coming at people," he said. "I just feel like there are ways to be better than Jay-Z, there are ways to be better than Kanye West. When you talk about success and artistry and doing amazing works, these guys are on a whole nother planet. You won't surpass that because that's a legacy that they left. It's because of that you get to do what you do. But I just think the future is always incredible."

Usher Says New 'Rev Pop' Project Is A 'Movement'

Singer teases his new project by pointing to past hits like 'Yeah!' and 'OMG.'
By James Montgomery

Usher
Photo: MTV News

With the success of songs like "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love," "Hot Tottie" and "OMG," Usher had himself a fairly massive 2010. But rather than rest on his laurels, he's looking to build on his big year, not with an album, but with a "movement."

It's something he's calling "Rev Pop" — or, simply, "Rev" — and though he's already teased his idea in a video with David Guetta (Akon is also involved), he has yet to speak in full about it. So when MTV News caught up with Ush before the 53rd annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles at the (Belvedere) RED launch party, we asked him about his next musical endeavor. And though he didn't reveal much, he did let it be known that "Rev" isn't exactly something new. In fact, he's been doing it for a while now.

"I'll give it to you this way: At a later date, I'll tell you more about Rev Pop, but if I were to give you a flash: I've done it before, I did it with 'Yeah!' " he said, "taking a cultural experience, and also worldwide recognition of a feeling, and putting the soul in the middle of it. Not allowing it to shift heavily to R&B genre, or pop. I did it again with 'OMG,' once again putting the soul in the middle of it, which was an electric-pop experience, with the soul.

"It's bringing those elements together to tell a story, that was born here," he said, gesturing toward his heart, "And that's what Rev Pop is. There's more, I mean, I could really elaborate, but that's just what I'm going to tell you right now. 'Rev' is what it's called ... the movement is called Rev."

Usher wouldn't say just when his fans would be getting their first taste of Rev, but whenever they do, it sounds like they're going to be impressed ... if not a little shocked.

"Stay alive," he smiled, "Because you're definitely going to be in for a surprise."

Lady Gaga Calls Terry Richardson Book 'Completely Unfiltered'

'I didn't hold anything back,' Gaga tells MTV News about upcoming photo book.

Late last month, Lady Gaga announced she was teaming with photographer/provocateur Terry Richardson to release a hefty coffee-table book, one that features more than 350 photos of the singer taken by Richardson over the course of 10 months.

The two have worked together — with appropriately pulse-quickening results — several times in the past, most notably a September 2010 cover shoot for Vogue Hommes Japan that served as a sneak peek of the now-infamous meat dress she wore to the 2010 VMAs, and a clothing-optional campaign for Supreme in February 2011.

But if you thought those shots were shocking, well, get ready for the duo's book, which, as Gaga told MTV News on Monday night in New York, will push things even further.

"Terry was with me for [almost] a whole year, and, gosh, I didn't hold anything back from Terry ... he was with me every minute, every moment," she said. "It's completely unfiltered. He has photographs of me waking up in the morning, brushing my teeth, in the bathroom, in the bathtub, the shower. And the thing about Terry, if you know anything about his photography, is that nothing is staged; I mean, that's sort of what he is renowned for. He can get you to do things and he can capture things that no one can ever capture.

"What I love so much about Terry is that he thinks everything is so beautiful. I'm always, 'Oh Terry, get out of here,' and he's like, 'Oh, it's so beautiful, let me just shoot it,' " she continued. "I felt so comfortable with Terry. I love him so much. He's a really close friend, and I feel really honored that he traveled [with me]."

Gaga said the self-titled book (which hits stores November 22) not only showcases her whirlwind life — it follows her from the main stage of Lollapalooza to her Maine rally to repeal "don't ask, don't tell" to the final shows of her Monster Ball Tour in Mexico City — but the lives of her ultra-dedicated fans too. That was as much a goal as the unfettered access was. And, from the sound of things, the book manages to accomplish both.

"My favorite thing, honestly, is that [Richardson] loved the fans. He shot the fans the same way he shot me: with no pretense. No 'Well, she's put out records and they haven't.' None of that. The music was all of ours," she said. "He would come backstage and he would say, 'Oh my God, the fans!' And I'd say, 'I know ... I know what you just photographed.' And he'd say, 'Baby, wow!' And then he'd film me, like, peeing in a cup and, like, ridiculous things."

Them Crooked Vultures make their debut with a post-Lollapalooza set.

Officially, Lollapalooza ended Sunday night in Chicago's Grant Park, with dueling sets from the Killers and Jane's Addiction. Unofficially, it ended very early Monday morning, across town at venerable rock club the Metro, with a surprise show by Them Crooked Vultures.

To the unfamiliar, the Vultures might seem like an odd choice to close out Lolla weekend ... until you realize that they're made up of Foo Fighters frontman/ former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age mastermind Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin legend John Paul Jones. And their gig at the Metro was their world premiere.

According to some reports, the Vultures actually turned down Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell's request to replace the Beastie Boys as headliners at the festival, opting to debut in front of some 1,100 super-psyched fans at the Metro, rather than 75,000 in Grant Park (tickets for the gig were announced via Foo Fighter/ QOTSA fan clubs). Meaning that, in a lot of ways, this was the most sought-after ticket in town.

Taking the stage just after midnight, the Vultures — Grohl on drums (of course), Homme on guitar and vocals, Jones on bass and keys and frequent QOTSA contributor Alain Johannes on guitar — ripped through 12 songs in 80 minutes, all taken from their upcoming debut, which may or may not be called Never Deserved the Future, and may or may not be hitting stores on October 23 (early "promo" videos touting both those facts were revealed over the weekend to be hoaxes perpetrated by QOTSA fans).

The songs, with appropriately Homme-ian titles like "Scumbag Blues," "Mind Eraser (No Chaser)," "Caligulove" and "Interlude w/Ludes," sounded pretty much how you'd expect, given the band's pedigree. They rocked, hard — Chicago Tribune critic Greg Kot described them as "fresh, invigorating and just plain nasty" — delving off into psychedelic, reverb-filled excursions and exploring proggy territory, "both of the old-school Yes variety, and the more modern Tool flavor," according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Jim DeRogatis.

It's not known if Monday's Metro performance was a one-off event for the Vultures — there have been whispers of a full-blown tour, but a spokesperson for Homme had not responded to MTV News' request for comment at press time. Nor was it clear whether or not they'll have an album out in October.

Early Monday, a Crooked Vultures Twitter account, which had previously posted links to the band's official-looking Web site and the Metro's online ticketing site — posted a link to what appears to be the group's first bit of official merchandise: a Deserve the Future T-shirt. Cost: $30.
