Michael Jackson Doctor Trial: Sizing Up Defense, Prosecution Cases

Two lawyers watching the case weigh in on who presented strongest argument in Conrad Murray trial.

It's up to the jury now. After six weeks of testimony, the seven-man, five-woman jury in the involuntary manslaughter case of former Michael Jackson doctor Conrad Murray began their deliberations Friday morning (November 4).

They've heard from 49 witnesses, including some of Jackson's former employees, a number of Murray's girlfriends and patients, medical experts, police investigators and ER workers. In closing arguments on Thursday, prosecutor David Walgren told them the evidence the state presented was "overwhelming" and showed that it was "abundantly clear" that Murray caused Jackson's death by acting in a negligent manner in providing the singer with the surgical anesthetic propofol in a non-hospital setting.

It capped weeks of prosecution testimony that pointed to the many alleged breaches of professional conduct by Murray, who Walgren painted as an opportunist lured by a big payday into providing medical services that were out of the norm, dangerous and, ultimately, deadly.

Defense attorney Ed Chernoff countered with arguments that investigators were sloppy in collecting evidence and that it was Jackson, not Murray who was to blame because, according to the defense, the 50-year-old singer self-administered the fatal propofol dose that took his life on June 25, 2009. As we await the jury's verdict, we asked a pair of lawyers not affiliated with the case to break down both sides' arguments and weigh in on how each did in presenting their cases.

"If he's convicted, I'm not sure it will be due to any tactical errors on the part of his defense team," said Robert Weisberg, a law professor at Stanford University and faculty co-director of the school's criminal justice center. "This case does not jump out at me as one where there was any alternative strategy. If he's convicted, it's because he's guilty, and based on the evidence it's not looking good for him."

Weisberg praised the prosecution's case, pointing out the strength of the rebuttal testimony of prosecution anesthesia expert Dr. Steven Shafer, who was recalled to the stand to poke holes in the alternate death scenario laid out by defense witness Dr. Paul White.

Los Angeles-based criminal defense attorney Mike Cavalluzzi said he thought the prosecution told a "great and very tight" story over the course of the trial, beginning with Jackson's longtime confidant and director/choreographer Kenny Ortega. It was the "This Is It" director who opened testimony in late September by telling the jury "my friend wasn't right," setting the chaotic scene at the rehearsals for the show.

As for the investigative mistakes that Murray's lawyers pointed out during their cross-examination of prosecution witnesses, Cavalluzzi said he felt those arguments were "grasping at straws" by the defense and had no real relevance to the negligence accusations against Murray. "Those felt like red herrings," said Cavalluzzi, who has worked a range of criminal matters in L.A. courts from misdemeanor battery to homicide. "There was very compelling evidence from doctors about the extreme deviations from standard care by Murray even before June 25, by administering propofol in a residential setting and then laying out, piece-by-piece, how many deviations there were."

He also said that the testimony of nurse practitioner Cherilyn Lee, who was called by the defense, was very compelling. "I'm not sure it helped the defense," Cavalluzzi said. "She said Jackson was begging for propofol and she knew never to accede to that request. It made the defense position so difficult when every objective medical professional said the conduct Murray engaged in was extremely dangerous."

What could the defense have done differently? Weisberg said he wouldn't fault them for the case they put up, aside from what he called the very unusual tactic of voluntarily having Murray speak to police in a taped interview two days after Jackson's death.

The jury has to bring back a unanimous verdict on the single felony count, and Cavalluzzi said what they most likely took away from the testimony of the doctor and nurses who took the stand for the defense is that Murray should not have been administering propofol to any patient, let alone someone who clearly had substance abuse issues like Michael Jackson.

"The character witnesses were brought up to make you think that Dr. Murray is a nice person, but involuntary manslaughter is not a crime of moral turpitude," Cavalluzzi explained. "It is not a crime which bad people engage in bad behavior. Nobody is accusing Dr. Murray of stealing or intentionally harming anyone. What they're saying is that he may have been a good man who made a horrible mistake and that the mistake that he made rises to criminal negligence, which makes him guilty of involuntary manslaughter."

If Murray gets off, though, Cavalluzzi predicted it would be because of his generous reputation as laid out by former patients, which could cause some doubt as to whether Murray did something that killed Michael Jackson or if Jackson administered the fatal dose himself.

"It's a very, very tough case," he said. "I think it's compelling in so many ways, as an insight into the genius of Michael Jackson and the price he paid ... he wanted to deliver such an extraordinary concert and that, it killed him."

'Breaking Dawn' Sex Scene 'Super Serious,' Robert Pattinson Jokes

'It's not just human sex. It's ... obviously blown a little bit out of proportion,' Kristen Stewart adds on 'MTV First.'

Of all the moments fans are eagerly awaiting to see after "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" hits theaters on November 18 — the wedding and infamous birth scene included — few can measure up to the hype surrounding Edward and Bella's first sex scene.

When MTV News' Josh Horowitz sat down with Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner for "MTV First" and asked the cast questions submitted via Twitter, it was no surprise that the fans wanted to know more. One of the first questions asked was: "Rob and Kristen, was it extremely awkward filming the love scene in the movie? Were you guys laughing a lot throughout?"

Both Stewart and Pattinson turned quiet after hearing the question, and the answer was unanimous and definitely a joke. "Super serious," Pattinson said.

"Yeah, me too," Stewart agreed. The mood was certainly lighthearted and jokey, but Stewart ended up giving the question a serious answer. "Not to give anything away ... You've been working for so long, and it's also not real," Stewart said. "It's not just human sex. It's ... obviously blown a little bit out of proportion, slightly. It's kind of like the most important scene in the movie. It's so weird."

Pattinson agreed and shared his own, let's say, intimate experiences filming the love scene. "I just ended up thinking purely about vanity things," Pattinson said. "You're sitting there in a little g-string. ... They give me a big g-string, but it was too small for me. It was like old ham."

Not to be left out, Lautner shared his relief to have missed out on a g-stringing in "Breaking Dawn," but reminded everyone that he had his "fair share of g-strings in 'Eclipse.' "

New Led Zeppelin On The Way? Jason Bonham Hints At 'Jam' Sessions With Jimmy Page -- But Not Robert Plant

Drummer admits he doesn't know what will come of 'new material.'
By Chris Harris

Jason Bonham
Photo: Larry Marano/ Getty Images

On Friday morning, mere hours before he was due to take the stage with classic rockers Foreigner at Detroit's GM Renaissance Center, drummer Jason Bonham — the son of late Led Zeppelin kitman John Bonham — told Jim Johnson and Lynne Woodison of local rock station 94.7 WCSX that he'd be an ex-member of Foreigner as of September 1. But that's not the only thing he said.

Much to the delight of Led Zeppelin fans everywhere, Bonham revealed that he's been meeting up with Led Zep guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones in recent months and that they've been "trying to do some new material and writing."

It was the first time since Led Zeppelin announced they would re-form for a single performance (which happened late last year at London's O2 Arena, in honor of the late Ahmet Ertegün, who signed the band to Atlantic Records in 1969) that anyone connected to the band has confirmed publicly that new music could be on the horizon for the iconic rockers. While the bandmembers have stopped short of definitively ruling out such a reunion, singer Robert Plant insisted in the wake of last year's show that he intended to focus on promoting and touring behind his critically lauded album with bluegrass artist Alison Krauss, Raising Sand.

Not that Bonham knows what — if anything — will happen with the new material he's been working on with Page (who collaborated with pop singer Leona Lewis on an uneven version of Zep's "Whole Lotta Love" at the Olympic closing ceremonies in Beijing on Sunday night) and Jones. He said he just shows up and takes his seat behind the kit.

"I've been over [to England] a couple of times," Bonham said. "I've been working with Jimmy and John Paul and trying to do ... some new material and some writing. I don't know what it will be, but it will be something. At the moment, all I know is I have the great pleasure to go and jam with the two guys and start work on some material. When I get there, I never ask any questions. If I get a phone call to go and play, I enjoy every moment of it. Whatever it ends up as, to ever get a chance to jam with two people like that, it is a phenomenal thing for me. It's my life. It's what I've dreamed about doing."

He said it's still too early to tell what will become of these "jam" sessions, but admitted that the "possibility of doing something is in the cards. I really felt it was in the cards from the moment we walked offstage at the O2." Bonham also explained that, before there could be a Led Zep LP, "lots of politics [would need to] get ironed out," but added that recording with Zep is "something I've always wanted to do."

Bonham noticeably didn't mention frontman Plant's name during the discussion. A spokesperson for Page's management had no comment on the matter, and a spokesperson for Jones' management could not be reached by press time.

The X Factor Top 12 Results: Who Was Sent Home? (PHOTOS, VIDEOS)

It was a tough night for Paula Abdul, as two of her groups received the lowest number of votes and therefore had to sing for their lives during the final showdown. We start off the night with the Top 12 performing together, obviously lip syncing (ahem, LeRoy Bell) which prompted Fox to release this statement: ?All survival songs are performed live, with just a backing track. For the group ensemble performance, the vocals are pre-recorded to allow acts to concentrate on preparing for their own live competitive performances ? this is also no different to what other competition shows do for ensemble performances.? But before those results, the acts talk about what it would be like to star in their own Pepsi commercial. Blah, blah, blah. It set up a perfect segue for ‘Tonight Is the Night’ by Outasight, the song that you hear now during its commercials. Read more about this guy here. Okay, moving on. The mentors and their acts are introduced on stage. In no particular order, as Steve reiterated, the following acts learned their fate: Marcus Canty, Drew, LeRoy Bell, Astro, Lakoda Rayne (seriously?), Rachel Crow, Chris Rene, Josh Krajcik, Melanie Amaro and Stacy Francis. Justin Bieber Addresses Paternity Suit On 'Today'

'I know I'm going to be a target, but I'm never going to be a victim,' Bieber says.
By Jocelyn Vena

As more details surface about the paternity suit filed by 20-year-old Mariah Yeater against Justin Bieber, the pop singer is addressing the allegations head on.

Earlier this week, Bieber released a statement saying, "it's sad that someone would fabricate malicious, defamatory and demonstrably false claims," and tweeted, "so I'm going to ignore the rumors ... and focus on what is real. An opportunity to help by doing what i love. Judge me on the music! Love y'all!"

When he stopped by the "Today" show on Friday morning (November 4) to promote his latest album, Under The Mistletoe, Bieber also spoke candidly about Yeater's claims. "I'd just like to say basically that none of those allegations are true," he told Matt Lauer. "I know I'm going to be a target, but I'm never going to be a victim."

See How Top Beliebers Are Supporting Justin

Yeater claims she had unprotected sex with Bieber a year ago in a backstage area at one of the singer's concerts and that her 3-month-old baby is his. According to an upcoming issue of Star magazine, "in a hand-signed affidavit, sworn under the penalty of perjury, Yeater told a California court that Bieber propositioned her on October 25 of last year, when she was 19. The pair had a sexual tryst after his concert and backstage at L.A.'s Staples Center, it's alleged in court papers."

Bieber explained on "Today" that the logistics of her claim don't fit with his hectic schedule. "I think it's crazy because every night after the show, I've gone right from the stage right to my car," he explained. "So it's crazy that some people want to make up some false allegations, but to set the record straight, none of it is true. Never met the woman."

While the case is ongoing, Bieber is focusing on the positive, which includes his charity work. "Like I said before, there's going to be good and going to be bad about this business and I want to focus on what's real, like my fans are real, the charity work that I'm doing with this album is real and this is real," he said speaking about all the fans that showed up at Rockefeller Plaza to catch a glimpse of the teen star. "I do it for these guys and I'm really happy to be here in New York and it's been fun."

Michael Jackson Doctor's Trial: A Timeline

Prosecutors took their time bringing Conrad Murray to trial for involuntary manslaughter.
By Gil Kaufman

It's hard to believe that nearly 2 1/2 years have passed since Michael Jackson's death. But, because the wheels of justice grind especially slowly when it comes to celebrity trials, we are just now on the cusp of a verdict in the involuntary manslaughter case of Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray.

Murray, the Texas cardiologist handpicked by Jackson to be his personal physician in the lead-up to the pop icon's 2009 This Is It comeback shows, spent three weeks listening to prosecutors disparage his treatment of Jackson in the hours before the singer's death. But his path to infamy began years before that fateful June 25, 2009, morning when he called Jackson's assistant in a panic.

The pair first met in 2006, when Jackson was living in Las Vegas — where Murray has a clinic — and called the doctor seeking treatment for one of his children. They became friendly, and Jackson turned to Murray in early 2009 when he was attempting to get into fighting shape to launch his first major concert series in more than a decade. Jackson, then 50, agreed to pay Murray $150,000 a month to serve as his personal physician before and during the 50-date engagement at the O2 arena in London.

Here's a timeline of Murray's trial:

One week before Jackson's death: Murray and members of the AEG Live team promoting the concert meet to discuss Jackson's fitness for the shows, and Murray allegedly says the singer is ready and healthy.

June 24, 2009: Jackson, who reportedly suffered from insomnia, returns from a rehearsal late at night and attempts to fall asleep.

June 25, 2009: Unable to sleep, Jackson asks Murray to give him a series of doses of the surgical anesthetic propofol and other sedatives in order to get to sleep. After hours of fitful sleep, Jackson goes into cardiac arrest, and Murray scrambles to try to save his client's life, waiting more than 30 minutes to call 911.

June 27, 2009: Murray and his lawyer voluntarily speak to police investigators for more than two hours and lay out the events of the morning Jackson died. This interview will become one of the key pieces of evidence in the prosecution's case.

July 17, 2009: Los Angeles District Attorney's office announces it is treating Jackson's death as a homicide.

July 23, 2009: Investigators file for a search warrant for Murray's property.

July 29, 2009 : Los Angeles police and DEA agents cart away several plastic bins and manila envelopes of evidence from Murray's home in Las Vegas.

November 20, 2009: Search-warrant records show that investigators found receipts in Murray's Las Vegas clinic for purchases of propofol in May 2009.

January 7, 2010: Los Angeles coroner's office announces that Jackson's official cause of death is "acute propofol intoxication" and his death is ruled a homicide. The report also shows a number of other sedatives in Jackson's system at the time of his death.

February 8, 2010: Murray pleads not guilty to involuntary manslaughter charges and is released on $75,000 bail after turning himself in to authorities.

June 14, 2010: A judge denies a request from the California Medical Board to strip Murray of his California medical license.

November 30, 2010: Michael's father, Joseph, refiles his wrongful-death lawsuit against Murray and the Las Vegas pharmacy that sold the physician propofol.

January 25, 2011: Murray pleads not guilty to a single charge of involuntary manslaughter and his trial date is set for March 28.

March 24, 2011: Jury selection in the trial begins with a pool of more than 300 potential jurors.

April 29, 2011: The trial is delayed until September at the request of Murray's legal team, citing more time needed to line up defense experts.

September 23, 2011: The jury for the trial is seated.

September 27-30, 2011: The trial begins with opening statements that include a recording from Murray's cell phone in which Jackson's voice is slurred and lethargic. The first four days of testimony detail the chaotic scene after Jackson's death, a security guard describing Murray's request to put vials of propofol in a bag and testimony from two emergency room technicians about what Murray told them when Jackson arrived at UCLA hospital.

October 3-7, 2011: ER doctors explain that Murray never told them he'd administered propofol to Jackson and a string of Murray's former and current girlfriends testify about the calls the doctor made to them in the hours and minutes before and after Jackson's death. The jury hears more of the Jackson recording, including his desire to build a children's hospital and the fateful recording of Murray's two-hour talk with investigators.

October 10-12, 2011: Jurors hear from medical experts who claim Murray was not prepared to give proper care to Jackson and did not follow protocol when his patient went into distress.

October 21, 2011: The prosecution wraps up its case with testimony from propofol expert Dr. Steven Shafer, who lays out 17 mistakes he believes Murray made in his care for Jackson.

October 24-28, 2011: Murray's defense team calls witnesses to discuss the 911 call placed by the doctor and LAPD detectives to refute statements made by Jackson's bodyguard about Murray allegedly hiding evidence.

October 31-November 1, 2011: Murray's defense team continues questioning its final expert, propofol expert Dr. Paul White, who suggested that Jackson had injected himself with the drug while the doctor was not in the room. White admitted that Murray's medical care for Jackson was out of the ordinary.

November 3, 2011: Closing arguments begin.

Stick with MTV News for full coverage of the Michael Jackson involuntary manslaughter trial, through the verdict and beyond.

Beyonce Invites J. Cole Over For A 'Party' In New Video

Clip, which premiered Wednesday night, also features appearances from Kelly Rowland and Solange Knowles.
By James Dinh

Beyoncé is known as one of the industry's hardest-working pop stars — even when she's expecting. A mere week and a half since dropping her boy-band tribute video for "Love on Top," the pop titan has unveiled the visual for her J. Cole remix of "Party" on Wednesday night's (October 26) episode of BET's "106 & Park."

"Party" takes viewers back to an old-school backyard celebration full of colorful bikinis, freestyle dancing and a few familiar faces, including sister Solange Knowles and former Destiny's Child bandmate Kelly Rowland. Throughout the video, B lets loose, playing a sort of party host. If she isn't lounging in beach chairs, she's dancing among her friends or mowing the yawn. Yes, Beyoncé is multitasking!

And it wouldn't be a celebration without an appearance from J. Cole, the guest MC behind the remix of the Kanye West-produced tune. Midway through the video, the Roc Nation signee pulls up to the party with his ride glimmering brightly in the sun and spits his verse in the parking lot.

B fans learned there would be a clip for "Party" back in August, when the mom-to-be was spotted in New Jersey's Oakdale Mobile Home Park. Probably due to her impending motherhood, Queen B shot a slew of videos for cuts from her album, 4, ahead of time. "Party" follows previous clips for "Love on Top," "Countdown," "1+1," "Run the World (Girls)" and "Best Thing I Never Had."

'Glee' Season Finale Exclusive: Listen To 'Yeah!' Here

An a cappella girl group covers Usher's hit for Nationals in next week's episode.

During this week's episode of "Glee", the gang from New Directions took a big risk when they decided they would compete in Nationals by singing their own original songs. Well, the stakes just got a little higher.

MTV News has an exclusive first listen to one of the rival groups who will go up against the McKinley High glee club in New York City during next Tuesday's (May 24) big season two finale. In the upcoming episode, an all-female a cappella group sings Usher's 2004 club and radio smash "Yeah!," which may have the Nationals judges saying just that.

Singers replace synthesizers for the four-note melody that repeats throughout the song, and lead vocalists RaVaughn Brown and Missi Hale match the high energy that Usher, Lil Jon and Ludacris brought to the track.

Granted, a few things have been tweaked in the version for the tween-friendly show, including the length (the original is over four minutes long, while the "Glee" version comes in at three and a half minutes) and the tune's instructions to "Take that and rewind it back ... got the rhythm make ya booty go."

Also, instead of Ludacris' verse, "We want a lady in the street/ And a freak in the bed," one girl sings, "You know you want a kiss on the lips, old red." The line, "Ludacris fill cups like double D's" has also been cut from the song.

But, it's not all PG. At one point in the girls' rendition of the track, they page homage to Lil Jon's crunk hit "Get Low," singing, "From the windows to the walls" and even Mystikal's booty-happy single "Shake Ya Ass," when they urge, "Show me whatcha' workin' with."

At the 2005 Grammy Awards, the power trio of Usher, Lil Jon and Ludacris won the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "Yeah!" But, will the song bring the same sort of fortune to this girl group at Nationals? Or will the glory all belong to New Directions this time? Gleeks will still have to wait a few more days to find out.

The "Glee" season finale airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. on Fox, while "Glee": The Music, Volume 6, including the three new original songs "Light Up the World," "Pretending" and "As Long as You're There," will be available on Monday.

What do you think of this a cappella group's version of "Yeah!"? Let us know in the comments section below!

Britney Spears Boyfriend's 'Criminal' Role 'A Challenge'

Chris Marrs Piliero opens up to MTV News about working with non-actor Jason Trawick in new video.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf

Britney Spears certainly had everyone talking when she dropped her steamy "Criminal" video. Sure, fans were talking about the sex and gunplay, but they were also going bananas over the appearance of Brit's real-life boyfriend, Jason Trawick, who plays her criminally handsome beau in the clip.

The idea to include Trawick in the video was all Britney's, but director Chris Marrs Piliero wasn't sure he was so into it. "When she first hit me up, she had a basic story in mind, and she actually always originally planned to have Jason, her boyfriend, play the role, and I wasn't super stoked on that idea at first, actually," he told MTV News.

Most of his reservations were because Trawick isn't a professional actor and he wasn't sure his rookie acting skills would translate well in the mini-movie. "I wanted to make a really rad, epic video, and I definitely got the sense from her she wanted something really cool," he explained. "And in my mind, I was just thinking then, 'We really should not be using your boyfriend; we should get an actor.' So, I mean, I didn't say that, but in the back of my mind, I'm like, 'I don't like this idea at all.' "

Trawick and his abs, however, managed to impress Piliero — and Britney loyalists everywhere. "At the end of the day, Jason killed it. That was one of those things I was really stoked [about], as much as I went into it like, 'Wow, he's not an actor. This is going to be interesting,' but I really do like a challenge, and I really do like the idea that I'm a director and my job is to direct and get the performance. For me, it was a fun challenge to be like, 'I'm gonna make sure that you are awesome,' and he was."

Piliero also worked with Spears on her video for "I Wanna Go," and he was once again dazzled by her sassy acting skills. "Of course, Britney was rad," he said. "She does a good job at nailing and doing the little acting thing. She's cool at it."

Lady Gaga, Beyonce And More Musical Halloween Costumes

If you're too broke to go trick-or-treating, Bigger Than the Sound is here to help!
By James Montgomery

Halloween is just around the corner, and even though times are tough, that doesn't mean you shouldn't still have a kick-ass costume. And since no one wants to end up trick or treating as a lame ghost (or a "sexy border patrol agent"), I'm here to help, with a handful of homemade Halloween costumes that allow you to still dress up as your favorite artist, while not breaking the bank.

Of course, if you don't have a bank to break, fret not, because a lot of my ideas don't require a costume at all — just your imagination, a fierce attitude and an awareness of irony that borders on, well, ironic. So, if you're at a loss for your next costume — or too broke to care — read on, because, boy, do I have some suggestions for you. After all, Halloween is for everyone (especially those who love candy), and who among us doesn't want to dress up like Coldplay?!? Have a look, and send me some candy!

Adele: Deceptively easy. Refrain from speaking to anyone all night (vocal rest!) while firing through Marlboros like a mahjong player on a bender. For added authenticity, sell approximately one bazillion albums.

Beyoncé: Take a balloon and stuff it beneath your $10,000 Reed Krakoff dress, mimic B's matronly glow with a $7,000 HD Ruby and Diamond Peel Facial, strap your $1,200 Christian Louboutin heels on extra tight to replicate the ankle-swelling side effects of pregnancy. Or just down a crate of Four Loko and get all crazy like the "Ring the Alarm" video.

Britney Spears: Get a boyfriend with exactly 24 rippling abdominal muscles. Consume Strawberry Frappuccinos as if they were being discontinued. Be a commercially viable force, much to the consternation of critics and naysayers the world over. Say "y'all" a lot.

Coldplay: Dress in matching, finger-painted outfits with three of your closest friends (or, in a pinch, tattered French Revolutionary garb). Donate all your candy to Oxfam. Hang out with Brian Eno. Maintain an almost annoying level of self-efficacy.

Justin Bieber: Just get a snake named Johnson.

Kanye West: Communicate to every single person you meet as if you were speaking in ALL CAPS. Wear sunglasses, even at night. Have a bizarre thing for the Olsen twins. Over-share when it comes to your personal feelings and sexual proclivities. Create complex, Machiavellian conspiracy theories. Treat every comment and criticism as if it were a flaming sword to the torso. Cut a Maybach in half with your pal Jay-Z.

Katy Perry: Dress up as a mermaid. Or a gawky, orthodontically enhanced pre-teen. Or an S&M cheetah. Or a space alien. Or, really, you could just lick a bunch of candy and stick it to various parts of your body. Katy's simple.

Lady Gaga: Sure, you could go the easy route and just trick or treat as Jo Calderone (and deliver a lengthy monologue while doing so), but where's the fun in that? Instead, why not meld yourself with a motorcycle, like the British boxer-turned-model, make a drug-fueled music video with him. Note: May not get you a ton of candy on the farms of Northern Ireland.

Lady Gaga To Headline Z100 Jingle Ball Concert

Demi Lovato, Kelly Clarkson, Pitbull and others will also hit the stage for the annual holiday concert at Madison Square Garden.

It's time to get in the holiday spirit! On Friday (October 21), radio station Z100, with the help of pop star Demi Lovato, announced the lineup for their 2011 Jingle Ball concert.

All you Little Monsters better mark your calendars, because Mother Monster herself, Lady Gaga, will be headlining the big event. The holiday concert will take place on Friday, December 9, at New York City's Madison Square Garden.

Lovato, who is also hitting the stage at Jingle Ball, helped announce the lineup at the official kickoff party at the Aéropostale store in Times Square, where she also performed. The singer took the stage in front of a crowd filled with her fans (a.k.a. Lovatics) and sang four songs, including her cover of Lil Wayne's "How to Love" and her hit single off her Unbroken album, "Skyscraper." Lovato sat down with MTV News before the big event and told us just how thrilled she is to be a part of the big show.

"I just know I'm performing at Jingle Ball and that I'm really excited," Lovato said. "I'm going to the Aéropostale store and I'm announcing the Jingle Ball lineup."

Of course, Gaga and Lovato aren't the only acts hitting the stage. Pitbull, LMFAO, super-producer David Guetta, and Lovato's personal favorite, Kelly Clarkson, will also be in attendance.

"I used to go to her concerts and now I'm performing with her," Lovato said of sharing the stage with Clarkson.

But wait, there's more! Gym Class Heroes, rockers Foster the People and pop newbies Hot Chelle Rae will also perform before the New York crowd.

Tickets for Z100's Jingle Ball go on sale November 1.

Justin Bieber Leaves Tyler, The Creator 'Starstruck'

Odd Future MC dreams of crafting a '90s-R&B-style beat for JB.
By Rob Markman

It may be a stretch to call Tyler the Creator a Belieber, but the Odd Future maestro is a definite Justin Bieber fan.

"I met Justin back in February. He's a cool kid and sh--," Tyler told MTV News. "When I got in there, he was talkin' about the 'Yonkers' video and sh--. It was weird, because I was sitting here starstruck, like, 'Oh, f---, it's Bieber. He's asking me questions.' I'm like, 'Shut the f--- up so I can talk to you.' "

The outspoken rapper/producer may not have been able to get a word in edgewise, but he isn't deterred: He still has dreams of crafting a track for the Biebs. So is the OFWGKTA terror going pop? Not exactly.

"I just want to make '90s R&B, like break beats, hard drums with pretty chords and sh--," Tyler said of the type of track he'd make for Justin. "I really want to do that. Like, I be listening to Brandy or the first three Mary J. [Blige] albums and sh-- and Faith [Evans] and Zhané and sh--. That sh-- is awesome."

Bieber is no stranger to hip-hop. On top of collaborating with Kanye West and Raekwon on a remix of "Runaway Love," his upcoming holiday album features Busta Rhymes. On their version of "Little Drummer Boy," Bieber's rap alter ego, Shawty Mane, even gets in on the action. "If you really think about it, it's genius, because it's rapping on a Christmas album ... and, like, I'm rapping on it. And then it's singing," he explained to us during the "MTV First" premiere of his "Mistletoe" video. "It's cool. [Busta's] got, like, a percussive voice to him [and] the beat was so crazy."

The Wolf Gang's knack for pushing the envelope and risqué content may make him and the Biebs an odd match. On October 11, Tyler released a video for "BSD," a sexually explicit track from his Goblin LP and on the same day sent this tweet: "This Video Prolly F---ed Over My Chances Of Ever Working With Bieber. F--- It."

Even if he doesn't get to work with Justin, Tyler's still a fan. "He's chill as f---, though," Tyler said.

Blake Lively Gets Carried Away at Louboutin Cocktail Party

Fresh off of a full day of filming, Blake Lively got all glammed up to join designer Christian Louboutin for his cocktail party and book launch event in New York City on Tuesday night (November 1).

The Serena van der Woodsen actress was all smiles as she joined fellow guests including Calvin Klein, Nick Gruber and Tyrese Gibson before being carried away (literally) upon hitting the exits - with Mr Louboutin sweeping the 24-year-old off of her feet as they departed the Barneys New York venue.

The outing comes just after a new "Gossip Girl" preview titled "Time Bomb" has been released ahead of next week's ?I Am Number Nine? episode.

Set to air Monday, November 7th at 8/7c on the CW, a synopsis of the drama's upcoming installment reads: "Blair makes a competition to fill her bridesmaids spots in her upcoming royal wedding. Meanwhile Nate is tired of keeping the secret of his relationship to Diana, so he decides to use Charlie to make Diana jealous. Serena's boss wants to acquire the film rights to Dan's book, so Serena has to put her personal feelings aside to close the deal."

Kelly Clarkson Says Breakup Songs 'Scare Men Off'

'I love a feisty song,' she says of her new album, Stronger.
By Christina Garibaldi

Kelly Clarkson
Photo: RCA Records

Kelly Clarkson is doing what she does best on her fifth studio album: delivering powerful pop breakup anthems. Stronger has several feisty songs that will help any girl get over a broken heart, yet Clarkson told MTV News she wasn't channeling her own breakup woes for inspiration.

"A lot of times, if I'm writing it ... a lot of people think that's about a guy; it's not actually about that. It's more about my work environment," Clarkson said. "I write 'metaphorically speaking' a lot. Sometimes it's not always about a guy; I just end up writing it more that way because it's better for mainstream radio. I actually haven't dated in a while, so there's no breakup song for me on there."

With hit songs like "Since U Been Gone," "Behind These Hazel Eyes," "Walk Away," "Never Again" and, most recently, "Mr. Know It All," Clarkson has become known as a 'Break-Up Anthem Queen', a title she doesn't mind having.

"I love a feisty song. I like to be sassy. That's usually a breakup song," Clarkson said. "It's really in your face."

And even though Clarkson isn't revealing any personal heartbreak on this album, it doesn't mean she hasn't been scorned by a boyfriend in the past.

"I have been through one [breakup] that was real crappy," Clarkson said. "I think that'll last me for a lifetime, so I'm good. That was enough sorrow for one year. So I've been through it enough to where if I have a song, I can sing about it and I know the experience."

But the experience wasn't all bad for Clarkson; it seems this former flame was an inspiration for many of her songs.

"He was just a really loser guy and that kind of whole situation. I was like, 'Oh, I didn't pick very good — oops!' Just the environment, I think, as a whole wasn't a healthy situation," Clarkson recalled. "I don't know what was wrong with me. I was never in love with him. We're completely different. I don't even know why. I think that is how lonely you get sometimes, when you're like, 'Well, you don't look so bad.' That was bad, but I got a lot of songs out of it!"

So could this guy be to blame for Clarkson's single status? "I'm convinced that I scare all men off," Clarkson joked. "I date a lot of musicians as well, and they write about relationships just as much as I do, so I don't think it's abnormal."

What do you think of Kelly's latest album? Let us know in the comments!
