30 Seconds To Mars' This Is War documents a very tumultuous period of the band's life: recorded with a $30 million lawsuit hanging over their heads, at great personal expense, it is, in a lot of ways, the album that almost wasn't. And yet, more than a year later, its success has not only legitimized 30STM's entire career, but revitalized them.

So, the question begs to be asked: Just how do they top it? When the band stopped by the MTV newsroom last week for our "State of the Union" live stream, we asked them about surpassing the impact of War ... and, as it turned out, not only are 30STM not thinking about it, they're not sure they ever will.

"I don't think you have to top anything ... I don't ever think about it," frontman Jared Leto said. "I think evolution takes place, no matter what; if you're engaged, if you're in the middle of the process, if you're listening to your head, your heart and your gut, and you follow that direction, that's all that matters. We're not really doing anything except focusing on what's in front of us right now, and that's being in the middle of touring, and doing the best job that we can every night, to make sure that everyone that comes to the shows has the best night of their entire f---ing lives."

And while 30STM will continue to tour at least until August, eventually, the jaunt will come to a close. But what happens after that? Last month, Leto told Kerrang! magazine that there might not be a new album coming any time soon ... or at all. And when we asked him about that comment, he remained focused on the present. And noncommital about the future.

"You never know what's going to happen. I have no idea what's going to happen in a month, two months, three months ... but we've had an incredible year," he said. "This Is War has exceeded our expectations, and we're just happy that people are rallying around and supporting us and being a part of this crazy journey around the planet."

What would you think if 30STM stopped recording new material? Sound off in the comments!
