Great news for GI Joe movie fans (all 3 of us) … director Stephen Sommers, who helmed GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra, has signed on to direct the film’s sequel! There were a few reports going around that Sommers would not be brought back for GI Joe 2 but it turns out that those reports were wrong … Sommers is back and GI Joe 2 is on the way!

“G.I. Joe” director Stephen Sommers will return to direct Paramount’s sequel, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap. There had been some doubts about whether Sommers would be brought back into the “Joe” fold, as there were conflicting reports across the blogosphere last summer that there had been some tension between Sommers and the studio, but the alleged bad blood appears to have been resolved. Channing Tatum is expected to reprise his role as Capt. Duke Hauser in the sequel, which is still in development at Paramount. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Collider reported earlier this year that Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (“Zombieland”) were hired to write the sequel, and I’m told that the studio is happy with the draft they turned in. Sommers will likely produce with Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

I know that GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra got panned all over the place but I really loved the film and am very much looking forward to part 2. For me, movies like GI Joe don’t have to be masterpieces … they just need to be fun with an emphasis on doing the characters we all know and love justice. I felt that The Rise of Cobra really stayed true to the classic 80′s cartoon and I’m really hopeful that the next movie will remain true and be even more over-the-top fun. In February of this year, we started to hear chatter that the Crimson Twins of Cobra, TOMAX and XAMOT, may be featured in the sequel and I’m really hopeful that they will. I’m also hopeful that Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays Cobra Commander, will be more heavily featured in the sequel as well. Another GI Joe movie has all the promise of a really great popcorn flick … I can’t wait to see what they come up with. Now that Sommers has been confirmed as the director, they can get down to the biz of filming again :D
