Prince Harry, who spent some time last week touring the mine fields of Mozambique as well as chillin’ with his big bro Prince William and soccer stud David Beckham, has made his way to the US this week in order to spend 3 days in NYC in an effort to strengthen UK-US military ties. Harry paid a visit to the cadets at West Point Military Academy before making his way to NYC to give a speech on the deck of the USS Intrepid which is now permanently stationed as a museum ship in NYC. Britain’s Prince Harry says the bonds between British and American military veterans are strong but can be even stronger. Harry spoke Friday on the flight deck of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City during a reception for U.S. and British veterans and their families. The third in line to the British throne said his country can learn from American advances in veterans’ care and rehabilitation. Earlier, Harry joined cadets training at the U.S. Military Academy as he started a three-day visit to New York. On Saturday, he’ll throw out a first pitch at a Mets baseball game and on Sunday he plans to participate in a polo match on Governor’s Island in New York Harbor … The polo event will benefit American Friends of Sentebale, the U.S. arm of the global charity co-founded by Harry that supports impoverished children of Lesotho in southern Africa. He’s holding a reception for the event Saturday evening in Greenwich, Conn.
Some of you may recall that the USS Intrepid is the ship that my friend Mark’s dad bravely served on in his military days. It’s really very cool to see Prince Harry on the deck of the very same military ship that served as a temporary home for Mark’s dad. As mentioned above, Prince William made a visit to West Point before he visited the Intrepid. Prince Harry showed he knows his way around a rifle as he joined cadets in training at the storied military grounds Friday at the start of his three-day visit to New York. Harry, third in line to the British throne, arrived by helicopter just after 1:30 p.m., uniformed in camouflage. He hopped on the back of a Humvee, swapped his light blue beret for a helmet and headed out for live-fire exercises on the firing range and field exercises in nearby woods. Harry, who served in Afghanistan in 2008, fired an M4 rifle along with a team of West Point cadets involved in a firing range training exercise. He and the cadets shot at pop-up silhouette targets anywhere from 50 to 300 meters away. Crouched in the gravel and then later lying down, Harry had to hit the “enemy” targets but refrain from shooting at the yellow-banded “friendlies.” Col. Casey Haskins said he did quite well, hitting multiple targets. “He clearly knows what he’s doing,” Haskins said. “He clearly knows how to shoot. He clearly knows how to move.” Prince Harry later shadowed a group of cadets through heavy woods in a combat exercise but did not participate. He was met upon his arrival at West Point by Superintendent Lt. Gen. Franklin L. “Buster” Hagenbeck and others. Cadets presented Harry with a ceremonial saber before he flew back to New York City a few hours later … Harry did not speak to roughly three dozen British and U.S. reporters following him at the academy. But cadets said he talked to them about his experience in Afghanistan and the differences between West Point and Sandhurst. “He seems like a really down-to-earth guy,” said Cadet Kristen Griest of Orange, Conn.
I LOVE that Harry is here in the US. He is, by far, my fave member of the Royal family mainly because he seems the most down to Earth. I’m certain the cadets and military persons who met with Prince Harry yesterday were impressed with his realness, especially since at such a young age he already has considerable military experience. He strikes me as the perfect UK ambassador to strengthen the military ties between the US and the UK. It sounds like he’s had a great first day in the US … here’s hoping the rest of his trip is just as fantastic.
